Hello Spring... Hello Sun Protection
WE ARE ALL
anxiously waiting for the weather to turn warmer so we can throw on
a tee shirt and a pair of shorts to enjoy the beautiful weather our
coast has to offer. In the meantime we should start planning our
attack against the harmful sun rays. Here are some helpful reminders
to minimize sun exposure and protect oneself from skin damage.
-
The sun is strongest between 10am
and 4pm. Plan more outdoor activities for early morning or late
afternoon.
-
Wear tightly-woven materials for
best sun protection; a hat, long sleeve shirt and pants will
keep you best protected in the spring.
-
Apply a sunscreen 20 minutes
prior to sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours. Use
a sunscreen with at least a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15.
-
Remember even overcast days can
still damage your skin, so utilize sunscreen as daily
protection.
-
Beware of reflecting surfaces
such as sand, water and concrete. Even though you are standing
in the shade, reflective surfaces can still expose you to
damaging sun rays.
-
Sun damage occurs over time so
educate your children and grandchildren about the dangers of sun
damage. Set an example of what is good sun sense by utilizing
sunscreen regularly and wearing protective clothing.
If you would like the look of a
suntan without all the damage that can be caused by hours in the
sun, consider a sunless tanner or a bronzer. These types of products
provide a tanned appearance without exposure to the sun or other
sources of ultraviolet radiation.
One ingredient commonly utilized in
these products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a color additive that
reacts with amino acids in your skin’s surface to darken the skin.
The FDA authorizes the regulation of color additives including their
use and restrictions, and has approved DHA for external application
to the human body. Some sunless tanning products may also provide
protection from the harmful sun rays in which case they will be
labeled with an SPF factor. So get ready to enjoy a beautiful spring
and summer by being prepared to stay safe and healthy!
