Atlantic Beach Mayor's Notes

Annual Holiday Celebration Approaching

I LOVE A PARADE. But in Atlantic Beach the tough economic climate has forced us to cut costs wherever we can to maintain our low tax rate. The Town Council, staff and I have decided that it would be best to save money this year by not holding a Christmas parade. We believe that our citizens would rather have us cut back on celebrations like parades than on services. The costs associated with closing Highway 58 are quite high, so eliminating the parade this year will help us stay on budget.

We are, however, still planning some great holiday events. We are holding a tree lighting ceremony and community Christmas party at our fire station. Both events were well-attended last year and we are excited about hosting our citizens again this year.

On Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7pm we’ll light up the tallest Christmas tree on the Crystal Coast at our 2nd annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. Our tree will be erected at the flag poles at the entrance to the circle. After the Tree Lighting Ceremony we’ll all walk across the street to the fire station where we’ll have food and drinks. Live music will be provided by the Atlantic Beach Fire Department’s Pipes and Drums band, as well as the Bouge Banks Baptist Church Choir, who will serenade us with Christmas Carols.

Santa Claus himself will be our guest of honor at the Christmas party and free photos with Santa will be available to kids of all ages.

This is a great opportunity to get out and mingle with your neighbors, elected officials and town staff. We had an excellent turn out last year after the parade and we look forward to hosting you again this year.

On behalf of everyone at Town Hall, I would like pass along wishes of Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year to all of our residents and visitors. It is a pleasure to serve you.
